Een opvallende, groenblijvende vaste plant, in ons klimaat echter niet geheel winterhard, daarom afdekken in de winter. De ijle groeiwijze van de plant en de massale donkerpaarse bloei maakt hem uitermate geschikt voor verwerking in boeketten en als achtergrondbeplanting. De bloemen zitten als platte hoofdjes aan sterk vertakkende stengels en verspreiden een opvallende phlox-geur. De bloemstengels zelf zijn bladerloos.
