De IJslandse papavers worden als tweejarige geteeld. De bloei, in verrukkelijke pasteltinten, is hierdoor veel rijker. Wanneer na het zaaien de plantjes goed hanteerbaar zijn, uitplanten op de definitieve plaats van bestemming. De planten staan graag in niet al te felle zon en in normale tuingrond. Bloemen in knopstadium snijden indien gebruikt voor de vaas. Ook geschikt voor in potten en containers.
