Groeit uitstekend liggend op de composthoop, maar voor de mooiste vruchten is het beter om de plant omhoog te leiden en de vruchten te laten hangen. Prachtige vruchten met een stevige buitenkant, waarvan na drogen, uitstekend vogelhuisjes kunnen worden gemaakt. Zaaien onder glas in potten of zaaibakjes op warmte, afharden en uitplanten. Pas op voor nachtvorst. Drogen van de vruchten op een koele donkere plek.
