Cynara cardunculus Meerjarige plant met violette bloemen, die nog voordat ze uitkomen worden geoogst als groente. Een ware delicatesse! Indien niet tijdig geoogst, dan is de bloem ook fraai. Zaaien onder glas op zaaibedje of bij voorkeur direct in potten om de penwortel zo weinig mogelijk te beschadigen. De meest gestekelde planten verwijderen en alleen de mooiste en sterkste planten opkweken. Heeft een stevige bemesting nodig. Is niet geheel winterhard, dus in de winters met bijv. stro afdekken.
