Halfhoog gewas met groen fijngekroesd blad. Boerenkool is beduidend minder veeleisend dan bloemkool en groeit op elke grondsoort. Zaaien op plantbed of rechtstreeks in (pers)potjes. Grond vochtig houden. Uitplanten rond augustus in een goed bewerkte en bemeste grond. Jonge plantjes beschermen tegen koolgalmug en koolvlieg d.m.v. anti-insektengaas. Bevat veel mineralen en vitamine B en C. Kan matige vorst zeer goed verdragen.
